Aviculture

Being introduced to the world of Aviculture at the age of 9 years has given me 46 years of involvement in this fascinating pastime. It can be a very satisfying and rewarding undertaking. It can also be extremely heartbreaking at times when you are faced with disease or illness that you have not encountered in the past. Thankfully I have been fortunate in having had far more good times than bad.

As do most who become involved in the world of Aviculture I have kept and bred many different species of birds over the years. Since settling in the sugar city of Bundaberg which is located on the Central Coast of Queensland, Australia, I have chosen to concentrate on the beautiful and varied species -Neophema- and the recently reclassified Bourke's Parrot which are small Australian Grass Parrots whose colours and characteristics in both their natural state and the more recent mutation colours can be as striking as any bird found anywhere in the world. Due to the size, quiet nature and call of these birds I have found them to be extremely well suited to city life.

Here I hope to give a brief description of members of this genus offering my opinions on the keeping and breeding of these beautiful birds for anyone wishing to get started in this fascinating pastime, starting with the former neophema the Bourke's Parrot (Neopsephotus Bourkii) and adding other members as their pages are completed. Forgive me if I refer to the Bourke as a neophema as old habits die hard.
